Message from the Chief Douglas Short of the City of Independence Fire Department concerning COVID-19:
From the Office of the Fire Chief
Over the last few days I have sat at my desk and have had sleepless nights thinking about what things I need to do to inform the public as we approach this pandemic event.
Independence, MO – the 4th largest city in Missouri – has one of the only Fire Departments in the Kansas City area that does not provide emergency transport service to their Citizens. In fact, the ambulance service in every surrounding community (excluding Sugar Creek, MO) is owned by its Citizens and operates under direction of their local government.
The Independence Firefighters Local 781 Good and Welfare Corporation was established on October 10, 1975. Composed of members of IAFF Local 781, the nonprofit corporation dedicates itself to bettering people’s lives through resources like the Community Service League and our local School Districts.
